Clinical Grief Work

In the discussion that follows, a fairly traditional approach to grief work is presented that is based in Worden (2002) and Rando (1984) especially. As this approach is presented, examples and comments will be shared that describe this approach with older adults. The elements of this work are taken to be expression of emotion, putting the loss in perspective, and adjusting to life without the deceased. The following section will describe problems that therapists have in doing grief work with older adults. The concluding section discusses ways in which grief work is generalizable to other losses in later life and the limits of such generalizations.

Before beginning this discussion, it is worth noting that the empirical evaluation of grief-work strategies is quite limited. Existing work, which is almost entirely based on bereaved young adults, suggests that interventions are more effective when they begin after the initial grieving period (Schut, Stroebe, Van Den Bout, & Terheggen, 2001). It would not be a good idea, in the light of this literature, to encourage the newly bereaved to seek therapy; it is better to wait and see who is still distressed 6 months to a year after the death of the loved one.
